WASHINGTON, May 7 — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Thursday that lengthy discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump marked a positive step toward improving diplomatic and trade relations between Brazil and the United States.

The two leaders spent roughly three hours in meetings at the White House amid ongoing tensions linked to trade tariffs and political disagreements. Although a planned joint appearance before reporters in the Oval Office did not take place, Lula later described the talks as constructive during remarks at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington.

According to Lula, the meeting helped reinforce cooperation between the two countries and reopened dialogue on key economic and strategic issues.

“We made important progress in strengthening relations between Brazil and the United States,” Lula told journalists. He also emphasized the importance of Washington maintaining strong engagement with developments in Brazil.

Trump later commented on the meeting through social media, describing Lula as a “dynamic leader” and saying the discussions were productive.

Trade, Tariffs and Strategic Resources

During the talks, both governments addressed a broad range of topics, including trade policies, tariffs, security cooperation, organized crime, and access to critical minerals.

Officials from both countries are expected to continue negotiations in the coming weeks as Brazil seeks the removal of remaining tariffs affecting its exports. In previous years, the Trump administration imposed heavy duties on Brazilian goods, including a 50% tariff on several products, citing concerns over Brazil’s legal actions against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Many of those tariffs were later reduced or suspended, especially on products such as beef and coffee, partly due to concerns about rising food prices in the United States.

Even so, some Brazilian exports still face an additional 10% tariff scheduled to expire in July. Brazilian authorities also remain concerned about the possibility of new trade restrictions linked to a U.S. investigation into alleged unfair trade practices.

Political Rivals With Similar Populist Appeal

Despite major ideological differences, Lula and Trump are widely seen as influential populist leaders who built strong political movements by challenging traditional political establishments in their countries.

Both politicians also experienced dramatic political returns. Lula returned to office after corruption convictions against him were annulled, while Trump regained political momentum following his 2020 election defeat and multiple legal battles.

Relations between the two leaders appeared to improve last year during meetings at the United Nations General Assembly, where Trump publicly praised his relationship with Lula.

Ongoing Friction Over Trade Policies

Although diplomatic ties appear to be improving, several disagreements remain unresolved. Trade disputes involving digital commerce, ethanol tariffs, and environmental concerns continue to create friction between the two countries.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative recently raised concerns regarding Brazilian timber exports, alleging that a significant portion may originate from illegal logging activities. Brazil’s government rejected the accusation and argued that deforestation levels in the country have dropped significantly under Lula’s administration.

Brazilian officials are also monitoring signals from the U.S. Commerce Department that could indicate another wave of tariffs targeting Brazilian products in the near future.
